The Burning House

A lone winding dirt road splitting off from the highway, the sign crooked and the letters worn, unreadable. The light shone through the tree's barren branches in a bright glow, as the sun peaked just above the horizon, the sky fading from a yellow to a deep purple. The tall trees overlapped one another along the sides of the road and created a roof of branches above the street below. A long dirt road that led to a lone two story burnt down house, the roof caving in and the walls charred; The steps were broken and the door was open to see the black rooms inside. Broken pictures clung to the walls, the glass shattered on the floor; The windows were broken and the curtains gone. The wrap-around porch was droopy and sad. There was nothing around, silence filled the air as the wind made the house creak and shake; The cold wind, winter air, was the only sound in the world around.

The house had caught fire, the sudden burst of flames eating its way up the stairs and into the upper floor. There was no one there to put it out, no one to scream for help. The house had been all alone for a long time, and it finally caught a flame. Finally burning away the dust that the years had left layers of upon every surface the air had touched.

The cat had splotchy gray fur, green eyes, bright green eyes that scanned everything with a look full of fear. It walked away from the house, limping slightly with each step.

(There had been a gas leak?)

The cat had been living there since the humans had left. It had been quite an odd day, people rushing about, packing suitcases with only the things they needed most clothes, food, essentials. Everything being thrown about in a whirlwind of hurry. They had all left that day, forgetting about the small gray kitten they had taken in; Forgetting that they had a small fragile pet, unable to take care of itself

The house had caught fire, the sudden burst of flames eating its way up the stairs and onto the roof above. There was no one there to put it out, no one to scream for help. The house had been all alone for a long time, and it had finally caught aflame. Finally burning away the dust that the years had left layers of upon every surface the air had touched.

The cat had splotchy gray fur, green eyes - bright green eyes that scanned everything with a look full of fear. It walked away from the house, limping slightly with each step.

The cat had been living there alone since the humans had left. It had been quite an odd day, people rushing about, packing suitcases with only the things they needed most clothes, food, essentials. Everything being thrown about in a whirlwind of hurry. They had all left that day, forgetting about the small gray kitten they had taken in; Forgetting that they had a small fragile pet, unable to care for itself.
The cat was laying down on the small bed in the once pink bedroom. The bed had once belonged to a young girl, with missing teeth and ribbons in her hair. The girl had been the one to find the kitten; Hidden away in a box by the river, shivering and starving on that cold autumn day. The girl had been called Lily, and called the cat Stormy. She had picked the frightened kitten up and cradled it close to her, speaking soft words as she went to her parents, she begged them to let her keep the small animal. Her parents pitted the tiny kitten, knowing it would die on its own. They took the kitten they named Stormy in, and nursed it back to health. It was shortly after this that the world had gone sideways. The cat looked around sadly at the empty, dust filled room. It’s footprints visible on the floor, making a path to and from the door.

There was a bonfire, a group of young adults stood around cheering and drinking, enjoying themselves. A small piece of flaming ash rose from the fire, drifting over the trees until it dropped, landing on the dust filled floor of the once pink room. The dust fueled the small flame, causing it to grow and grow until it engulfed the room. The cat jumped off the bed startled, and as its feet hit the floor, the dry-rotted wood caved in, causing the cat to fall into the kitchen below. Landing on its feet, one leg twisting underneath it as the flames surged around the cat. It took a step forward and let out a pained sound as it put pressure on its broken leg. The cat could feel the heat, feel the flames licking at its fur. It limped out of the kitchen, to the front door. The cat made its way through the living room and to the entrance, the door was cracked, just barely. The cat nudged the door open and made its way slowly down the stairs, the steps creaked and bent under the small cat’s weight, showing just how worn and supple the wood was.. The loud sudden sound of thunder made the cat jump, landing again on the broken leg it fell. Rain suddenly fell as if the sky was attempting to extinguish the roaring flames. It was like a war, the flames licking up, as if attacking the sky; the water falling in heavy droplets, pushing the fire back. The cat watched, hurting too much to get up, hoping that the sky would put out the raging fire before it spread to the barren trees surrounding the lone two story house.

By the time the sky cleared, the fire was gone. The house - the once strong standing family house full of life, was broken, charred, gone. The once bright colored walls, now a deep, charred shade of black. The cat - the once small gray kitten hidden away in a box, was laying there, watching the last drippets of rain fall from the dark clouds above. It’s heart slowed with each second, the life fading from the frail feline's body. As the sun peeked through the blanket of clouds, the cat took its final breath.
