@Althalosian-is-the-father book

Hey folks! This isn't exactly what andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer) meant this for, but I figured it would be a chill place to hang for the few interested in any aspects of film. Maybe we can help each other out or at least have a decent time.

(Moved this here because technically we aren't supposed to clog the intro chat.)

Hello everyone!
My name is Owen, as you can see from my very creative tag. I love film studies, cinematography, screenwriting, and short story writing. I spend too much time on YouTube and not enough time reading. I'm terrible at math and my second favorite reptile is the chameleon. Memes are my life source. I'm a language buff, even though I'm not fluent in anything except English (yet), so the duolingo owl is out to get me. Also I love cats.

I think that's an ok base line of who I am.
Can't wait to get to know you all :)

Greetings, Owen. Resident Dad™ here. You are interested in film. As am I, especially cinematography. Perhaps we shall be friends. What's the first favorite reptile? How are you into language? I am splicing one of my own thanks to Google for a tribe in my main work. You a Tolkien stan? Also, may I ask your age?
Random thing you'll soon learn is that I can (and sometimes will) argue about anything. And I am very blunt.
Do you roleplay?

Love that you love cinematography! It's hard to find people who do. My first favorite reptile is Eryx jayakari, partially for the name, mostly for the.. well just look it up and admire it's derpy face. I'm into language in the sense that I pick up a language, learn the basics, then get bored with it. Now I can recognize most languages from a few words or a spoken sentence or two, by recognizing the trends (except languages that have arabic script/writing.. havent been able to get to those ones yet) currently in a Mandarin class and my short term obsession for now is Irish.
I don't quite understand " I am splicing one of my own thanks to Google for a tribe in my main work." But from what I do comprehend it sounds like you're making your own language? That'd be really freaking awesome.
I'm not a Tolkien stan, tho I appreciate his work. Haven't read any of it, unfortunately.
I recently turned 16.
I'm excited to know you like to debate, as do I. Literally anything lol. I consider bluntness honorable, as I hold honesty in high esteem compared to other virtues.
I don't roleplay, don't even know how hah.

What do you roleplay?
What are you're first and second favorite reptiles (weird question, but why not?)
What's you're age, if you dont mind me asking?
And while we're at it, favorite movie?

Well language is low-key my jam. And a language based in sight angle and movement? Cooool.
Okay that's a cute reptile. You catch any snakes or lizards? Lizards were my childhood (I became very good at catching them.) And now I live in Snakesville so I catch bullsnakes.
I only know a bit of Latin, (I read a Latin Bible not very well once. Crowning achievement. But I haven't studied in years.) I know some very basic Greek words, and obviously English, plus some High Menna which is for my book which is a combination of Latin and Greek but with my own invented grammar system. I want to learn Arabic (because I'm an American Saudi–though you couldn't tell it by my skin halfie).
So pretty much I look for a word in Latin and Greek, find the ones that have the best connotations and go decently together and then mush, normally letting Latin lead.
Dude Tolkien is very likely the best worldbuilder to walk the planet. But even if you aren't in love with that–as I am as an intense worldbuilder–his books are just so amazing. LotR is my second favorite of all time. (Les Miserables is my first.)
I am turning 20 in a few months. I am Old. But honestly I'm still feeling like a child and wondering what I will do.
Oh then perhaps we will have fun together. Arguing can be most enjoyable. Honesty indeed is high among good things.
So basically roleplay (or RP as it is known) is writing a story together with other players while using a character you created. It can be quite fun and a great way to have low-stakes writing practice. Unfortunately, only one in a thousand last for an actual long time. I have a OXO or O/O (two player RP) in the PMs with Eris (Who I am glad you have met. My favorite person here.) that started in January of last year and is still going strong–though slowly and with a bit of bumping. (Bumping is a term where one person comments on an RP (normally with the word "bump") in order to remind them it exists by way of notification.) I'm not a huge RPer, but I do like it.
Reptiles… I believe the Gila Monster was the on that had individual miniature bones inside each scale. I think that was the one. And obviously dragons because dragons.
Prince of Egypt. A great movie. I find no fault in it but historical. And I don't count that because those details were manipulated in order to heighten emotional stakes in the movie, which I can understand and respect.

@berlioz

I've never caught snakes or lizards :/
There used to be a lot of little lizards where I live, but I think the urbanization is pushing them away, rip.
Your language technique for High Menna sounds fun. The number for people who speak Latin and Greek is becoming smaller and smaller.
RP sounds difficult.. I have a lot if people in real life who beg me to play D&D with them, swearing up and down that I'd love it, but eh. Not my jam.
I forgot about dragons, good choice.
And Prince of Egypt was great! I loved the animation and soundtrack, and it was so intense. Two of my favs rn are Jojo Rabbit and Interstellar

Hi~~ thanks for tagging me. A film thread in the forums seems like a fun idea :)
On reptiles: I grew up in southeast Asia; so I saw a lot of different reptiles just wandering around in forests or in zoos nearby. Snakes are my favourite reptile; love them. Though I have like,,,a phobia of seeing them irl. (yes ik its odd)
As for language, Greek and Latin are two that I admire from afar; beautiful, but I don't think I could ever attempt to learn them. Though– French is my passion. It just works with me + my brain. I've been trying to teach myself with duolingo for quite a while.
I keep meaning to watch Prince of Egypt!!!! it's on my list; but with online school now I barely get time to properly sit down and watch something. It annoying, since watching movies is my favourite thing to do.

@Althalosian-is-the-father book

Duolingo is the bomb, I've heard. Though the stuff about the owl makes it better. I haven't tried it. But if it gets Arabic I might. All the Arabic I've found you have to learn to read it as well. And I don't wan't to do it. Mostly because I'd have to learn to read backwards.
Tell me about Interstellar. What's good in it?
Also I like using Greek and Latin for High Menna because it means that one studied in language might be able to read it.
Snakes are amazing. I love them. Though normally I prefer them under six feet.

@berlioz

Duolingo definetely has it's perks. They do have Modern Standardized Arabic, but tbh it's not that useful in everyday conversation, as most people speak a dialect of Arabic (MS Arabic is usually formal, on TV, newspapers, etc). For example, most people on the Arabian Peninsula speak Gulf Arabic, while Egyptians speak Egyptian arabic.
Why dont you want to learn to read arabic? You couldn't read subtitles, literature, or signs!
Reading backwards isn't so bad. I started with Hebrew, and after a while once I saw the script my mind automatically read it the right way. It's not so bad.

One of the most notable things about Interstellar is the soundtrack- if Hanz Zimmer is doing it, the movie's bound to be good.
Second, it's directed by Christopher Nolan, who did Inception and I believe The Prestige.
One of the things I like about it is that the main plot is about humans getting off of Earth and expanding somewhere else. Truly exploring and settling space. Whereas you have movies like The Lorax or Avatar, focused on preservation of the Earth. I just like the idea that we weren't meant to stay on Earth forever, we were meant to leave it. Interstellar further explores that idea.
Plus the cinematography is sOOO beautiful. The shots are a little longer than average, I think, but it's so worth it. The characters are rich an diverse, all having differing opinions and ideas, but still a main goal.
It's really a great film.

@Althalosian-is-the-father book

Well the reason I want to learn Arabic is so I can speak it casually. It's part of my heritage and since I don't look like a Saudi on the first three glances I figured I needed to learn the language to get into the crowd. (It honestly works wonders on social interaction when it's someone who speaks the language.)
You've sold me on the movie. I'll have to see if I can watch it.

@berlioz

I feel ya, my first obsession was Hebrew, I wanted to learn so I could mingle with people who shared my culture and beliefs. My recent Irish kick was inspired by my immigrant grandparents. Never got to meet them, but I know they knew a phrase or two of Scottish Gaelic and Irish.
It's always fun to find ways to connect to your roots :)

@berlioz

A lot of people think so, especially school-mates (get some anti-semitic hate for it). But I'm actually a Christian. I believe the Messiah was Jewish, so I value Jewish culture and beliefs, celebrate some Jewish holidays too.

@berlioz

Cool, cool. Christian myself. What type are you?

Just non-denominational. I guess Biblical Christian or Jesus Freak are good labels lol. And you?

So it's a bit odd. I have strong ties to the Charismatic Episcopal Church. And I go to a Catholic church pretty often as well as Anglican, and Orthodox when I can. So I'm Traditional. I really want to find a church like the original church.

Interesting

@berlioz

Has anyone else watched Sherlock?
(Spoilers in the vid, nothing too major… plus I believe a little spoilers make a viewing better anyways)

!!! I love it. I wouldn't shut up about it to my friends and family after finishing it. It's so underrated– I was kind of shocked to see how little people actually watched it.

@berlioz

Yesss! Most people around me think it's just ok. I absolutely love it! The characters are so full of personality (great actors) and imo, it's a perfect modern adaption of Conan Doyle's work.
