I used to have trouble coming up with induvidual planets bc I'd only given them one distinct feature. "This one has rings. That one has farms. This one has mines." But I've noticed that to make a complex planet, you have to show how conditions on the world affect people. Does this planet have rings? People who live there probably have seen them all their lives and take them for granted. Its probably weird for them to see a planet with NO rings. Little stuff like that helps to make the planet distinct.

I mean, you COULD have planets with one distinct feature. You'd just need to give a reason why. Back in the days of good ol' European colonialism, many African colonies were specialized for one specific purpose; making money. Everything was geared towards producing raw materials and sending them back to the motherland. Then, the white colonists would keep all of the profits and give nothing back to the workers. Planets with only mines could be subjugated under some galactic empire that needs those specific minerals, the ones with farms would be dedicated to producing only a few types of crops on a gigantic scale. Then, when those planets declare independence (or the Empire crumbles), they'll be left high and dry because the people have known nothing but mining or farming. There might not be any good leaders or people who know how to find food due to the free rations handed out three times a day. That's what happened to those colonies, and those systemic issues still plague Africa to this day.
