(yes, the title is a P!ATD reference because I couldn’t think of anything else)

The Night is winning.
After so long, the Night is winning.

The Kingdom of the Day; golden, glorious, a city of light and roads paved with precious metals that glimmer under the warm light of the strong sun. Laughter and music hanging in the air, golden Egyptian-style collars and wristbands, tattoos coloured like the sunlight that dances over everything in its reach. Skin is shown freely, people dance together in the cobbled streets, notes and harmonies flowing through their veins. Ruled by the bold, lion-hearted Sol, god of the Sun, it is a beautiful, gleaming kingdom, its people bound together by heart and soul, rooted firmly in the land of Tessera as long as the Sun is still above the horizon. But when it dips down, when the moon takes its place, each shining turret, each singing citizen, fades away into a smoky, grey impression, an unmoving faded silhouette. Sol is the last to go, standing there tall and proud until the last of his resplendent kingdom has disappeared, until he sees a faint blue shape form a distance away. Slowly, it solidifies, becoming a woman. Selene, goddess of the Moon. She levels her gaze at him, raises a hand in farewell, and he is gone before the anger takes over his features, spirited away until the Sun rises once more.

And now, it is her turn. Around her, the Kingdom of the Night appears, person by person, building by building, replacing each fading impression of the sun god’s rule. Where the Kingdom of the day was warm, glowing, golden, buzzing with noise, the Kingdom of the Night is the opposite. A soft, peaceful hush falls over everything. The sky above is littered with billions of tiny stars, the Moon casting a subtle light over the scene below. The air is cool, carrying the faintest trace of quiet singing in an ancient language, but there’s no one to sing it. Each person has grey-blue skin and is swathed in light layers of fabric that ripples in the breeze. They are all happy, at peace, exchanging countless stories and thought-out words, carelessness is unknown among them. Selene smiles, for it is her turn to live, to breathe.

Each day, when the moon fades from view, she gives up her life so that Sol and his kingdom can live, but not of her own free will. While he rules for half of the day, she and her own Kingdom are cast into an in-between place ruled by the never-seen Morpheus, a grey plane of smoke and ash where no one is living, but no one is dead. Trapped between worlds, they wait until the Sun sets, finally letting them take the Day’s place. Sol and his people replace the Night in the In-Between, already anticipating their next turn.

For centuries, the Day has been winning the fight to exist longer, the Sun overpowering the Moon. For longer than most can remember, Sol has kept his people out of the In-Between for longer, fighting for the right to lengthen his rule, but finally, finally, the Night is gaining. Selene is winning the silent war.

That’s when everything begins to go wrong. Morpheus, tired of the imbalance, begins to mess with the Day-Night order to get the message through to both rulers’ heads that they are only meant to have turns that last for twelve hours. Sometimes, when the Kingdom of the Day fades into the In-Between, people of the Night are left behind, and vice-versa. Other times, people of either kingdom get pulled along to the opposite kingdom’s rule, leaving citizens of the Day stranded with the Night and citizens of the Night left with the Day.

Meanwhile, controversial opinions are rising. Small groups have begun to ask why the Day and Night must be separate. Some have even tried defying Morpheus, which has never actually worked. Either way, a turbulence has now entered both gods’ lives, one that the citizens are fighting to calm. Will the previous balance and order be restored, or will the two kingdoms be merged into one?

Rules:

Absolutely no IRL hate

There can be mature subject content such as gore, mental illness, abuse, etc, but please keep sexual things out of here

Don’t make up a character on the spot, please use a relatively developed one and modify them to fit this rp

Swearing is allowed, but the people might have different exclamations (e.g: “Oh, stars,” over “Oh, god”)

This is my creative property, based on a short story I wrote. Do not steal it.

No one-liners please, you aren’t expected to write a full paragraph every time but keep it relatively long-ish

LGBT+ is hella allowed

I will rp as Sol, Selene, and Morpheus if needed, but most of the time they’ll just be implied

Appearance Guidelines:

Citizens of the Kingdom of the Day generally have warm-toned skin, golden-tan or even yellow-orange. Their eyes are usually hazel, golden, a shade of brown, or very, very rarely pale crystal blue. Their hair is usually blond(e), light brown, or white, and they usually have a variety of sun and sky-themed tattoos inked onto them in colours paler than their skin. Other than that, they look pretty much human and are decked out in gold and crystal jewellery, think Egyptian-style. Skin is shown a lot, light shawls are popular, genitals are always covered.

As for Citizens of the Night, they have dark-ish grey-blue skin ranging a bit in shade but fairly consistent, as well as dark or silver eyes Long hair is more popular here, most often dark shades of grey, black, or white, whereas shorter hair is favoured in the other kingdom, and more clothing is worn, though they are not extremely conservative. Much less jewelry is worn, and all cool colours are used. Tattoos are not as common, and faint silver constellation markings can be seen on the skin of some citizens.
