I want to give a government in my world a reason to have parties, but I just can’t think of any political issues that would be relevant to a medieval setting. Anyone wanna help out here?

KingViv

Tax would be a good one. Normally a parliament arises as a means for the Monarch to negotiate for extra money (beyond what the Monarch's peronal land holdings provide) to fund wars. A possible issue that could split the parliament, might be Right of Consent - the ability for the Commons to deny the Monarch's request for taxes. Indeed, this was an important issue in England's parliament in the 14th Century

Members of the The Pro-Consent party could be there for the following reasons:

  • Power (Hoping to hold Tax money hostage in order to gain policy making power)
  • Ideological (Tax without consent is Theft and thus a Sin)
  • Anti War (wanting to prevent the economic devestation that war brings by making it impossible for the King to afford to start a war)

Members of the Anti-Consent party could be there for the following reasons:

  • Power (Hoping to gain favour with the Monarch byu supporting them)
  • Ideological (Monarchs are placed their by God, so it is wrong to withold anything)
  • Pro War (Wanting to make economic gains be making it possible for the King to afford to start a war)

Religion, for example, Catholic and Protestant (that thing from Maarten Luther which is big in the Netherlands)
The sudden death of a monarch without heirs (who are old enough)
A war with another land where one wants to be diplomatic and the other wants to do a show of strength
an uprising amongst the people and a difference of opinion on how to deal with it.
Any form of change that might threaten the power of another party (research Gengis khan and Temujin khan, youtube, extra history)

Those are the most common reasons from history I can think of right now.
