She took the hand, smiling as she shook. "Gean."

“Nice to, uh…” James cleared his throat. “Nice to meet you.”

"And you." She said, politely, fidgeting slightly

“I’ll just… um… get back to work,” James said awkwardly, shuffling back over to his desk.

She nodded, slipping out her letter as she watched the glowing words

James idly shuffled papers at the front desk, his mind straying to Gean. He was sure he’d seen her before, but he couldn’t place where, exactly. He was one to keep to himself, mostly, so he honestly wouldn’t even remember if she was a coworker or something.

She blinked, hiding it again and starting to actually read. New York Library, huh?

Sighing, James picked up the pile of books he had to re-shelve and began the tedious work.

She checked the time, picking up her book and going to check out.

James returned to the counter when he saw her standing there. “Can I help you?” He asked politely.

"Mind if I check this out?" She asked, holding up the book.

“No problem,” James said, holding out a hand for the book. “Do you have a library card?”

"Yeah, one sec." She took off her backpack, digging through for a bit. "Right here!"

“Awesome! Lemme just…” James scanned the card, noting the name that popped up on his screen. Gean Smith. He scanned the book, handing it back to her. “There you go. All set.”

"Thanks!" She said, taking back as she went to leave.

“Oh, um. Miss… Smith? You dropped this.” James held out the folded letter.

She bit her lip, going back to take it. "Whoops! Thanks man."

“No problem! Did you use.. special ink, or something? I can see it through the paper. Looks… glowy.”

She smiled before walking through the door.

"Uhhh…" She panicked a bit. "My grandmother is extra." She quickly lied.

James nodded. “Got it.” He looked a bit skeptical, but he let it slide. “Have a nice day.”

"You too." She said, hurrying out.

He sighed and muttered, “Not even my grandma is that extra. Nor do I pour over her letters, which she refuses to email. But whatever.”

She stopped at the bus stop, humming to herself

James was curious. He was also persistent. He grabbed a random pencil, rubbed the eraser down a bit, added a couple stickers, and ran after Gean. He managed to catch up to her at the bus stop, panting and out of breath. “Hey, hi. Sorry, you must think I’m insane. You, um.. dropped this.” He held out the pencil he’d tried to make personal-looking.

Gean bit back a chuckle. "Strange, didn't thing I had a pencil today. And I used all my 'Good Job' stickers on my nephew's notebook. Weird." She remarked coyly.

“Oh. Really? Darn it, I ran all this way for nothing. Sorry to bug you, I was almost positive I had seen you using this,” James said in a desperate attempt to cover up. “Well, I guess I should be going back. Again, so sorry to bug you.”

She smirked. "Oh, it's fine."

James nodded and turned away, beginning to walk back to the library.
