so basically I'm writing some fantasy stuff rn and in one of my works I want to create a sort of gigantic whale that swims in the clouds rather than the ocean. (it's also the only one of its kind.) but instead of calling it a whale, I want to come up with some other name for it. my first thought was "skybeast" buuuuuuut idk if that sounds dumb or unoriginal.

I'd appreciate any help or constructive criticism!

But just in case the thing is famous pick your language carefully. What area of sky is this in? What country? If it's not earth, what country is it most similar to?

You could change the name, and still can if you'd like. But, if nothing fits right, "skybeast" would probably be fine. I don't know if the races in your world are human or what, but it's perfectly normal for anyone to see a creature/object and name it based on what they see/know about. For instance, a race of my creating is called "blinkers" because they teleport, or "blink", from place to place. Or how someone will name their dog "Woof" or a rabbit "Hoppy". You can still make the name fancy and in a different language. This was just some advice that might help with naming things in the future, and partially a reminder that not all things have to be complicated. Good luck writing!

I know this thread is pretty dead and you may have already decided, but if you wanted something more rooted in mythology there are many sea monsters across different mythos. Leviathan (jewish), Kracken (nordic), not a monster but Sedna is the godess of the sea and ruler of the underworld in Inuit. There are probably some good myths more specific to wales too, but you'd have to research. My point is you could use one of these names or a variation?

@PyrrhicViolet I freakin LOVE mythology. Leviathans are really cool too, but I'm really thinking more of a whale type of creature, more peaceful rather than a sea monster. But I am a sucker for sea monsters!

@BrownMouse_ProudMemberOfTheForkCult_CatsAreDaBomb yeah, Sky Beast is super catchy, but I was trying to be a little more original. People seem to like this name for that creature though, so maybe it hasn't been used many other places and is a better idea than I thought!

I'm sorry but what you said about naming a dog 'Woof' just made me crack up because I'm trying to do a whale type and how would someone name a whale after its sound???? Like "yes this is my whale, his name is AROOOWHAAAAAAAAH"
AND ALL I CAN THINK OF IS DORY FROM FINDING NEMO MAKING THOSE EFFING WHALE NOISES

@Yamatsu

This is why Pokemon names are so strange. I certainly wouldn't imagine a four-armed, grey-skinned man to scream MACHAMP every time he does a pushup.
