I recently made a new type of creatures, that are basically the unevolved form of an angel. They can breed only while in this stage, but since they do not have genders, they can't do the traditional "roll in the hay".
So how can they do it?

@Darkblossom group

Honestly, I don’t know if it’s possibel without genders. As soon as they lay an egg or something similar they have a sex, so unless you have a magical way to reproduce I’m pretty sure it’s basically impossible.

@WaffleWizard

You could always make it more magical. Or perhaps an all powerful being blessed them with a child if they see them worthy of one.

@Darkblossom group

I have a race that can’t reproduce and technically none of them have a sex, though all have distinctly male characteristics. The way they reproduce is simple: they don’t. This big female dragon lays eggs which hatch into members of their species. So maybe have a separate thing or being, like a god, help them reproduce.

@WaffleWizard

Maybe they could just be immortal. That could add some drama of making sure they don't die, because then their population will be one step closer to extinction.

@RedTheLoveless

I can't believe no one said anything about asexual reproduction yet. It's literally something that happens in our world already so you don't have to use the lame "it's totally just magic" explanation.

Basic definition: it is a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism and inherit the genes of that parent only; it does not involve the fusion of gametes, and almost never changes the number of chromosomes.

AKA: Parent makes a mini clone of themselves as a child. Depending on the species is the method of how this occurs. For example, a sponge's way of this is different than a lizard's way of this.

I suggest looking it up and delving into some research on this. I'm sure you'll be able to find a use with this information. :)

@RedTheLoveless

Wait, but I heard that species that reproduce asexually are considered all female.

They aren't?? They literally have no sex organs comparable to any organism that reproduces sexually? The only reason they would be considered "female" is because that's the closest gendered word to describe a being that can clone itself to make children. Humans just seem to have a hard time grasping onto the fact that some species just don't have sexes comparable to their own. Therefore, to simplify it, they refer to the species as "all female", when in most cases that isn't the truth.

For example, many fungi reproduce asexually, yet no one refers to them as "all female". The same should be able to extend to this species Kohaku has created, should it not?

Okay! Here we go! This should clear things up.
Asexual reproduction comes in several forms:
Fission: The organism splits itself in 2 basically making a clone of itself
Budding: Extensions grow off of the organism and develop, then break away from parent to form a new organism
Fragmentation: When broken into pieces, each piece makes a new organism (like starfish do)
Parthenogenesis: This is where the misconception of "asexual organisms are all female" comes from, because in this case, females can reproduce alone, in few cases, leading to most or all-female species (Rotifers are the only ones I can think of right now). In this case, an embryo can form from an unfertilized egg cell, eliminating a need to mate with males of the species. (Although mating does present a evolutionary advantage)

@Becfromthedead group

Yeah, no problem! We learned about this in class a couple of days ago, so I was on it!
(Yeah, I'm okay. I've just spent most of this month sick with a really bad cold, then bronchitis, and I haven't felt like doing anything. I've also been spending more time in RPs and character boards than anything else, and even then, not much.)

@Becfromthedead group

(Yeah, especially since I'd never had it before and I didn't know what was wrong with me for almost a week. It's been almost two weeks now, and I'm starting to get better, but my throat still hurts a lot.)

@Mojack group

I’m glad asexual reproduction was also mentioned though. Didn’t know about the different forms though.

A lot of my kaiju species use that sort of method to make children. So that they don’t die.

@Kinarymo

Thank u for all the replies guys :0
To be honest, i did research many of the mentioned materials, but none seemed satisfactory, therefore i turned to this site, in hopes of unusual ideas.
(Srry if my specie description is so vague, i'm still working on its developement, but for some detail - these are creatures that can become angels (sorta like pokemon evolution). They are semi immortal, but they do have a child every 1000 yrs, to prevent extinction, as they are being hunted by another specie.)

@cue-nervous-humming

Well if you're looking for something completely random here is a weird idea:

  • they make a potion every 1000 years that includes some vital part of them (maybe an arm or a leg given the saying ;)) and that creates the next being
  • What they use to make the potion could also determine what future powers the new kid gets, like if they use a hand it gets super strength or if its blood then the new child has healing powers etc
  • so all these angels are trying to create strategic offspring so there's enough of every type of power
  • i can also imagine there being some really experimental angels (I'm just calling them angels right now for lack of a better descriptor but you know what i mean) who decide to try what happens if they freate kids from fingernails or ears etc
  • and they only have kids every 1000 years because thats how long it takes to recover from the process + adequately train the new angels
  • or maybe instead of it being a potion you could. Make them plant the body parts and take care of them for like 100 years befire they're ready to wake up

Sorry this is all just weird but I'm on a roll somehow… Just – ignore this if its too out there. Or morbid. I just realized it could be taken as pretty morbid. Oops. Anyways i hope you at least laugh, if nothing else comes of this post ;)
